Learn as much as you can about fashion. You can do this by taking some fashion classes at a design school or by teaching yourself by reading fashion magazines, and getting to know all the major photographers, designers, magazine editors, models and other important figures in the fashion world.
Write for fashion magazines and websites. You can work as a freelance writer for fashion magazines, websites or blogs. This will help you make contacts within the fashion world, and it will give you valuable experience and knowledge of the fashion industry.
Get work as a stylist. A fashion editor is a stylist first and foremost. She must have an intensive knowledge of fashion trends, styles, fabrics and a keen eye for detail. The best way to do this is to become an assistant to a fashion stylist first. Find local stylists in your area and ask if you can assist them, but you must be prepared to do it for free.
Get an internship at a fashion magazine. Once again you must be prepared to work for free, but the experience you will get is invaluable. As an intern you will also be able to attend photo shoots and assist the stylists and the actual fashion editor. Also, be sure to make important contacts with key players in the fashion industry. Develop a good relationship with them and they may help you find a job in return.
Apply for a job at major fashion magazines. Once you have all the experience and knowledge under your belt, you can start applying to various fashion magazines. You must have a detailed cover letter and impressive resume that details all of your experience and accomplishments. You should also include your published work or a portfolio of fashion spreads.
