How to Create a Digital Magazine Using Indesign

InDesign is an excellent program to use for creating a magazine. Once you've got your layout complete, you can easily create a PDF and put it up on the web for anyone to view. The program works seamlessly with Adobe Acrobat and GoLive to create documents for print, for the web and email. The following tutorial will give you a crash course in using these features.

Instructions

    • 1

Open InDesign and go to File>New>Document.

    • 2

Layout your stories on whatever page size you wish. Create a paragraph style for the title of each of your articles called "Title."

    • 3

      Save your document.

    • 4

Go to Layout>Table of Contents>Styles. With the Default style selected, click the Edit Button. In the Title text box, type what you want your table of contents to be called (For example, it could be Contents, In This Issue, etc.). Select a paragraph style in the drop-down box next to it.

    • 5

In the same box, move to the Styles in Table of Content Section. Click on the Title style in the box on the right and click the Add button in the middle. Click OK to exit the box.

    • 6

Once you have finished laying out your magazine, add a new page where you would like to include the table of contents.

    • 7

Go to Layout>Table of Contents. This will give you a box almost identical to the one you had when you set up your Table of Contents Styles. Make sure your settings are correct and hit OK. Your cursor will turn into a loaded text icon. Click anywhere on the page to add your new Table of Contents.

    • 8

      Save your document.

    • 9

Go to File>Export>PDF. Create a PDF using eBook settings to create a compressed RGB file that will keep your formatting for any movie clips, hyperlinks or sound files you embedded in the document. You can place this on your website for download. If you want to create a webpage from your InDesign file in GoLive, click File>Package for GoLive.
