How to Obtain an ISBN

So you have finally pushed out that book that has been sitting inside of you all of these years? Your next step is to get your book published. While some authors are picked up by major book publishers, others choose to self-publish their books. If you are in the latter group, you will need to obtain your own ISBN for your book to ensure that it is ready to be sold.

      Visit the U.S. ISBN Agency's official website

      Complete the electronic ISBN application and submit it online with the appropriate fees. There is also an option to mail in your application. The application can be mailed to International Standard Numbering System for the Information Industry, 630 Central Avenue, New Providence, New Jersey 07974.

      Wait approximately 15 business days to receive your ISBN number in the mail.

      Register your ISBN after you receive it. You can register your ISBN for free by visiting the Books in Print website. Books in Print is the official database that bookstores and libraries utilize when looking for books for their customers. Be sure to also include the title of your book, instead of just the ISBN. If your book title and ISBN are not registered, the stores cannot assist the customer with ordering your book.

      Document your ISBN number on the copyright page of your book as well as the back cover of the book.
