How to Publish a Book Using Candlewick Press

Candlewick Press publishes children's books. Currently, the company publishes about 200 books a year. Only about 5 percent of those books are written by new authors. Candlewick Press says it does not accept "unsolicited manuscripts." What does this mean? It means that to catch the publisher's attention and create interest in publishing your book, you should send what is known as a query letter. A well-written query letter will help you get your book published.

    • 1

Open a new word-processing document. Type your name, address, phone number and email address at the top of the page. Skip down one line and include the date. Skip down one more line and include the editor's address. Be sure to address the editor by name in your salutation.

    • 2

Grab the editor from the beginning. If the editor doesn't make it past your first paragraph, he will not make it through the manuscript. Use engaging language to set up the problem in your book. Be specific. Be excited. If you're excited when describing your book, the editor is more likely to be excited to read the book.

    • 3

If you are a new writer, don't mention it. Don't write anything in your query letter that is not related to the children's book you are trying to publish.

    • 4

Don't list terms for your book's sale in your query letter. This will turn an editor off faster than anything.

    • 5

Do disclose the structure and ending of your story. Editors like to know how a book will resolve.

    • 6

Keep the query letter to one page if possible, and do not go over two pages. You want to catch the editor's attention in a good way. Publishers receive many manuscript queries every day. By being succinct with your writing, you can demonstrate that you have the power to tell a story in only the necessary words.

    • 7

Edit your letter for spelling and grammar. Let the letter sit at least overnight before editing it. Read it aloud for flow. Sometimes you will catch missed typos by reading it aloud. Candlewick Press states that good writing is essential. This means that you will have a greater chance of publication with a meticulous letter.

    • 8

Print your letter, address an envelope, stamp it and mail it. Track the date you sent the letter to Candlewick. Avoid contacting the editor with a follow-up letter until three to six months have passed.

    • 9

If Candlewick is interested in seeing your complete manuscript, the publisher will respond. Do not send a complete manuscript until it is requested. Use the time you while you wait to hear about your query to perfect your manuscript. It should be flawless.

    • 10

Should Candlewick be willing to publish your book, work with the editor to create the finished product. Should Candlewick say "no" at any stage, you can revise your proposal and manuscript and try again.
