How to Write a Book With MS Publisher

When writing a book with the intention of self-publishing, proper formatting separates the professionals from the amateurs. Professionally formatted manuscripts are error free, use the same fonts throughout the manuscript, use a proportional font such as Georgia for the main text and include page numbers and page headers. They may also include a table of contents, special fonts for chapter headers or an acknowledgment page. Many people use Microsoft Publisher to create manuscripts using proper formatting.

Instructions

    • 1

Open MS Publisher. If you do not have an icon on your desktop, you can find Publisher by going to the Start Menu and clicking "All Programs."

    • 2

Create a new file. If you already have text saved in an MS Word file, choose "Import Word Document" as the publication type. Otherwise, choose "Book" as your publication type.

    • 3

Choose the design you want. For most books, you will want white pages and a proportional font such as Georgia or Century Schoolbook. When you have chosen the size, color scheme and font you want, click "Create."

    • 4

Click on the typing icon. This generates a small box. Click on one of the circles on the left side of the box to drag it to where you want it. Move the mouse over the box until the cursor becomes a double-sided arrow. Click the box and drag to make it as large as you want. You can spread it over the entire page.

    • 5

Type or edit your manuscript inside the box. Save every five to 10 minutes to avoid losing your work.
