How to Get a Fantasy Novel Published

Getting a novel published can seem like an exhausting task. You have finally finished your literary masterpiece, and now the hard work begins. However, as a fantasy writer, you have a sincere advantage over many other unpublished authors. Your work represents a popular niche market, and you can reach out to agents and companies looking for exactly the type of work you have to offer. You just need to find the right people.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a query letter for submission to literary agents. It should include a paragraph about you and your literary accomplishments, a paragraph summarizing your fantasy novel and a concluding paragraph thanking the agent for her time and politely requesting the opportunity for further consideration. In your summary, make sure to emphasize how your novel uses familiar fantasy conventions while at the same time telling a unique and captivating story.

    • 2

Make a list of reputable literary agents who specialize in fantasy literature. Reference guides like "Writer's Market" and "Guide to Literary Agents" contain updated lists of approved agents along with descriptions, contact information, requirements and information about the genre(s) in which each agent specializes. Find as many reputable agents as possible who work in the fantasy market, and put together a list.

    • 3

Mail a copy of your query letter to each agent on your list. You will need to make minor adjustments to each later, tailoring it to the specific agent, but most of the information will remain the same. Make sure to change the name and address of the sender in the heading of each letter, and adjust any information based on specific requirements set by the agent. Some agents will also request that you send sample chapters. Do not send your complete manuscript unless the agent specifically requests it.

    • 4

Locate and contact reputable publishers who accept unsolicited queries. While most publishers will not accept unsolicited manuscripts, some will allow you to send them queries directly. Tom Doherty Associates, for example, is one of the leading publishers of fantasy and science fiction, and accepts unsolicited queries from writers.

    • 5

Continue finding new agents and contacts. Some authors will send hundreds of queries before receiving a positive response, so continue locating new fantasy agents even as you wait for responses from your initial batch.

    • 6

Send a full copy of your manuscript to the agents or publishers who write back requesting your work. If an agent decides that he likes your work and wants to represent you, he will submit your work to publishing houses and help you on your journey to bringing your novel to the public.
