An Egyptian poet and playwright widely considered one of Egypt’s greatest classical poets, Shawqi’s work explored themes of love, nature, patriotism and politics. As a prominent figure of the Nahda (Arab Renaissance), he advocated for pan-Arabism and political independence from the Ottoman Empire.
