Harriet Martineau (June 12, 1802–June 27, 1876), also known as Harriet Martineau, was an English social theorist and writer on political, economic, social, and religious subjects, as well as a prominent campaigner for women’s rights. She is best known as the author of the Illustrations of Political Economy (1832-34) and the travel books Society in America (1837) and Deerbrook (1839). She also wrote other novels and essays, and translated the works of Auguste Comte.
