What Does it Cost to Get an EIN?

Contrary to popular belief, an EIN number, also known as an Employer Identification Number or Federal Tax ID number, is free of cost for a sole proprietor. You may have only one EIN, no matter how many businesses you operate as a sole proprietor. It can also be applied for as a corporation or LLC, non-profit organization, or business where there is a cost of about $100. The purpose is to identify your business as an entity, the same way your social security number identifies you.
  1. Who Needs an EIN?

    • 1. A person who is self-employed or who has employees.
      2. A non-profit organization.
      3. A corporation or Limited Liability Corporation.
      4. A business partnership.

    How do you apply for An EIN?

    • 1. You can apply for an EIN online at http://www.IRS.gov/businesses/small/article/0,,id=102767,00.html with a SS-4.
      2. You can call 1-800-829-3676 and apply immediately without an SS-4. You can receive the EIN then, and a letter will arrive within a week.
      3. Obtain an EIN by completing Form SS-4 (PDF). and faxing it to the IRS for processing. The IRS Fax numbers are provided in the instructions. An EIN applied for by fax can be issued within four business days.
      4. Obtain an EIN by completing the Form SS-4 and mailing it to the IRS service center address listed on the Form SS-4 Instructions. By mail, it can take up to four or five weeks to obtain an EIN.

    How much does it cost?

    • 1. A sole proprietor's EIN is free through the IRS.
      2. A nonprofit has a fee of up to $150, (depending on the state), which is paid to the Secretary of State for the EIN.
      3. A corporation or LLC has a fee of $100 for their EIN. (May vary from state to state.)
      4. A business partnership has a fee of $100 for their EIN, (also depending on the state.)
