Resume Writing Tips for Objectives

Candidates can significantly improve a resume by writing a clear and vivid objective. A good objective stands out and lets the employer know how serious the candidate takes the job search. Writing a powerful objective is easy once the applicant knows what their career goals are in respect to a specific job. Each resume should have a different objective if the applicant is sending the resume to different companies.
  1. Resume Content

    • If the objective lists sales skills, then sales-related experience should be listed.

Write the resume's objective so that it matches the resume's contents and the job desired. For instance, if the job being sought is for a marketing company, tailor the resume so that mostly marketing-related jobs are prevalent. As well, the objective should reflect the specific goals of the applicant as it pertains directly to the job they want. Make sure the resume's information provides support to the objective. If the objective mentions excellent communication skills, the resume should provide the applicant's roles in which they used communication skills.

    Details

    • Write an objective that truly shines.

Write a detailed and vivid objective that relays specific information about your goals and work ethic. According to Monster.com's resume tips, the objective should reveal exactly what the applicant wants to do, using specific terms. Writers should write an objective that is unique to them. For example, a candidate for a social media website marketing job should write, "Seeking a creative, innovative company for which I can apply my modern marketing, social media and computer technology knowledge and interests." This objective shows that the individual has considered all the facets of the job, and has knowledge in various necessary departments.

    Clear Format

    • Separate the objective so the resume looks clean.

Place the objective directly under your name and contact information. This should be on the top of the resume in such a way that it stands out. Write "objective" so that the reader knows what they are looking at. Bold the word "objective" so that it is its own section, apart from the job experience.

    Edit

    • Edit the entire resume and objective thoroughly.

Edit the objective so that it is free of spelling, grammatical and structural errors. Many employers will reject an application based on spelling errors.
