Read as much as possible. A good writer is first a good and voracious reader. Writers go beyond reading just for fun and read to understand how a story, essay or poem is put together and what elements went into creating it. A good reader is a critical reader, so try to understand your reactions to writing. Investigate writing that you like and writing that you don't like so that you can understand what you want to do with your own writing.
Write every day. By making writing a part of your everyday life, you begin to integrate your experiences, thoughts and reflections into your writing. Some writers keep a daily journal in which they jot down their thoughts and experiences, while others make it a point to work on a story, essay or other piece every day.
Consider your audience. Writers understand that their writing is aimed for an outside audience, and since good writers have been readers themselves, they try to put themselves in the shoes of the reader. When reviewing your own work, view it with a critical, objective eye.
Work on several ideas at once. Successful writers try to avoid running out of topics, so keep several articles, stories, poems or novels going at one time. That way, if you are frustrated with one project, you can just move over to another.
Create writing goals and meet them. If you set yourself the goal of writing five pages a day, sit down and fill five pages. Even if you don't think that the pages are good, this will get you in the habit of meeting your own goals and putting words on paper.
Live a full, various life. Take opportunities to travel and do things that are outside of your comfort zone. By taking in as many experiences and meeting as many people as possible, you will enrich your writing, as well as your life.
