Activity Ideas for Dr. Seuss's Birthday

There are many activities that can be done to celebrate or commemorate Dr. Seuss on his birthday, March 2nd. Although there are many Dr. Seuss fans, not many know his real name. Dr. Seuss was born Theodore Seuss Geisel and known as Ted Geisel to his friends. His stories are beloved by children and adults alike and his imagination can serve as inspiration for activities on his birthday.
  1. Visit Seuss' Statue

    • Dr. Seuss is one of a few children's writers to have his own public statue. The statue is located in Springfield, Massachusetts, where Seuss was born. The statue is bronze and depicts Seuss sitting next to the Cat in the Hat with a few more of his characters nearby. Schedule a trip to see the statue on his birthday and take along some items to have a picnic nearby. The sculpture is located in a garden that was designed by Seuss' stepdaughter, Lark Grey Diamond-Cates.

    Draw Like Seuss

    • Drawing some Seuss-like characters at home can be a great way to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday. All you need is paper, crayons, a few Seuss books and your imagination. This activity is great for kids because it gives them a chance to explore their own imagination. Look through the Dr. Seuss books that you have and study the characters and environments. Try to draw some of the characters in the book or try to make up your own characters that look like Seuss'.

    Read Seuss' Books

    • Take Dr. Seuss' birthday as a perfect reason to get cozy on the couch and read some entertaining and imaginative stories. There are many books to choose from that will keep you entertained all day. If silent and cozy is not your thing, a great way to get the kids involved is to gather them around the room and take turns reading one of the Dr. Seuss stories. Everyone can also play the popcorn reading game while enjoying his books. Popcorn reading is where someone begins reading, stops at a certain point and chooses someone to pick up reading where they left off.

    Seuss Play

    • An imaginative activity for Dr. Seuss' birthday is to put on skits or plays based upon Seuss' stories. The sets can be handmade from poster board or cardboard and colored with crayons. The costumes can also be handmade, but they may be a little more difficult. Different colored makeup will be a huge help when dressing like Seuss' characters. Choose your favorite Seuss book and plan out your play. Have some friends over or, if you are playing with your children, choose who will play the different characters. Assemble the set, learn your lines, and get lost in the world of Dr. Seuss.
