He was born in the city Belz, the son of a rabbi. During World War II, he lost his parents and brothers. He became a refugee and survived. He became a famous author in the USSR and Russia, and his works have been translated into more than 30 languages.
His most famous works include the children's books "The Golden Key", "The Adventures of Buratino", and "The Flying Ship". His satirical fiction works include "The Adventures of Ostap Bender" and "The Golden Calf". His historical books include "The History of the Jews in Russia" and "The Jewish Renaissance in the Soviet Union".
