Why was Wellington monument built?

The Wellington Monument was built to commemorate Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, as a national hero following his victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. It was funded by public subscription and designed by Anthony Salvin, and is located in Hyde Park Corner, London. The monument, completed in 1832, stands as a testament to Wellington's achievements and remains an iconic landmark in the city.
