Junkyard Angel Art Projects

Fashioning a junkyard angel can help push your creative thinking to include discarded, yet reusable items. Extending the life of found objects can include assembling the individual pieces or sculpting the pieces into another form with the help of tools. At the scrap yard, you should wear protective gloves and sturdy footwear to reduce risk of injury as you claim your earthly materials for transformation into otherworldly creations.
  1. Collage

    • For two-dimensional angels set on a canvas or wooden board, you can create a collage out of small, found objects. For an extra challenge, try fastening just one type of material or object, such as a collection of pop bottle caps or a sheet of bubble wrap, to the supporting background. Perhaps the scene can focus on subtle colors with angels made from different-textured surfaces, such as silvery foil, tin lids and metal gears.

    Winged Effect

    • If you wish to focus on an angel's wings, use fence wire, such as chicken wire, for an open airy look. Cutting cans from top to bottom and binding them to a wing frame can create a scaly look that reflects highlights from the sun. Stretching plastic sheets or netting over a frame creates a taut look. You can also fashion wings from overlapped pieces of linen, perhaps cut from drapery or bed linen.

    Shadowy Angels

    • Projecting light on to your junkyard angel can create a larger-than-life shadow on a screen or stage wall. This angel can wear materials that allow the light to pass through, such as the decorative spokes of a hubcap that could form an angel's halo. The angel's clothes can include translucent materials for a more diffuse look with the projected light. Experimenting with different kinds of light and angling the light source will help fine-tune the mood of the scene.

    Chorus of Angels

    • A chorus of angels of assorted sizes and appearances can make an eclectic group. Use household items such as floor lamps and coat stands with a sturdy base to form the angel's spine in a standing position. Cutting and binding discarded clothes, household linen and plastic wrap around the spine make the angels fashionably independent. Use pieces cut from discarded colanders or wire mesh to form the angel's armor embellished with metal cutlery or hardware. Arranging the many angels outside in a semi-circle or atop a ridge make an edgy chorus line.
