Do It Yourself Metal Hanger Art

Wire metal hanger art is a fun, artistic endeavor that requires time, patience and creativity. Best suited to teenagers and adults, wire hanger art requires some caution on the part of the artist and a little strength. As with many creative projects, the end result can be abstract or representative, two-dimensional or three-dimensional. Because wire hangers are inexpensive and easy to find, having many on hand will encourage you to keep trying until you have a piece worthy of pride.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on eye-protecting goggles. Try to find goggles that have very small air vents to provide maximum protection from the sharp ends of the wire.

    • 2

Untwist the wire hangers. Most of your sculptures will not retain the twisted ends and hook of the original shape.

    • 3

Bend the wire with your hands to get a feel for its strength and resistance. Arrange the wire to form various shapes until you decide what the final sculpture will be.

    • 4

Use the pliers to bend the wire into acute angles and specific shapes. This may require holding pliers in both hands to get the exact shape you want.

    • 5

Cut the excess wire with the wire cutters. Some artists like to incorporate the original twisted ends into the new sculpture, while other remove the twists altogether.
