How to Interpret Michelangelo's Pieta

In art, the term "Pieta" refers to an image of the Virgin Mary holding the deceased body of Jesus. The most famous representation of a Pieta is located in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican and was completed in 1499 by Michelangelo at the age of 24. Michelangelo's sculpture depicts a young Mary mourning the loss of her son; her face is peaceful as she stares down at his body. Interpreting Michelangelo's Pieta is relatively simple to do and requires using a photo of the statue to examine the details of the work.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a picture of Michelangelo's Pieta online or in a book. Also beneficial for interpreting Michelangelo's Pieta is finding an image of another artist's pieta so you can compare and contrast the two works. Doing so will help you understand the intricacies of Michelangelo's work. Conduct an Internet search to find another example of a pieta created during the Italian Renaissance.

    • 2

Study both images by looking at the faces of Mary and Jesus, their poses, clothing and anything else that may seem relevant to interpretation. Write down your initial thoughts about both Michelangelo's sculpture and your other example, including your first impressions and your emotional response to the pieces.

Note how the materials, texture, space, weight, line and location are used within each work. Make sure you understand the subjects of the art and the emotions displayed.

    • 3

Compare your notes about each work of art and look at what makes Michelangelo's Pieta different. The differences may occur in the material, poses of the figures, facial expressions, color or in other ways.

    • 4

Describe the basics of Michelangelo's Pieta to another person. Tell him what you noticed about Michelangelo's Pieta that differs from the other example you used. Explaining your interpretation to another person helps you understand your findings more thoroughly.
