How to Apply Underglaze

An underglaze is an oxide pigment mixed with clay or gum that you use to apply color to greenware or bisque. Because underglaze has a clay base, you can fire it even in high heat, up to cone 10. Underglazes are not glazes in the traditional sense -- you still need to apply a clear glaze to finish the piece. Some brands of underglaze work best on greenware while others are made specifically for use on bisque. Be sure to read all instructions on the underglaze bottle before use.

Instructions

    • 1

Shake the underglaze well and pour some into a small container. Dip a sable brush up to the ferrule and brush the glaze on using a fully loaded brush. Or you can wipe the underglaze on using a slightly damp natural sponge.

    • 2

Allow the underglaze to dry completely. You will be able to see it drying. Apply two more coats, moving your sponge or brush in different directions each time to prevent the underglaze from streaking. Allow it to dry completely between coats and before glazing.

    • 3

Dip a clean sponge into clear glaze and gently apply it over the underglaze. Allow it to dry and sponge or brush on two to three more coats, drying completely between each coat. Allow the piece to dry. You can now fire it.
