Instructions

    • 1

Decide upon the kind of sculpture that you want to create; carving, modeling or construction. Create a drawing of the end result as a prototype to follow along with, unless you are creating an abstract piece. This will provide you with direction while sculpting.

    • 2

Cover your work surface with newspaper and gather all of the materials that you will need, such as clay, stone, objects for construction, any binding materials, such as hot glue, and any other necessary tools. Lay everything out on your work surface and allow for a good size area to create your sculpture in.

    • 3

Create your three-dimensional art work using the method that you have chosen. If you are are attempting carving or modeling, place the solid piece of material in the center and start modeling or whittling away from the base of the sculpture, creating the desired shape as you proceed up. For construction projects, you will also want to start at the bottom of the sculpture and create a base that is sturdy enough to support the rest of the art work. Use any type of adhesive that you desire to fuse the different items together, allowing plenty of time for drying before adding new elements.

    • 4

Decorate your three-dimensional artwork with design elements, such as paint. If you are using this as an activity in a classroom you may expand the decorating options to include items such as glitter, feathers, crayon shavings, markers or crayons. The possibilities for decorating are endless, depending on your preferences.
