How to Decorate a Cow Figurine

The CowParade---said to be "the largest and most successful public art event in the world"---has inspired many professional and amateur artists, young and old. According to CowParade's official website, an estimated 100 million-plus people around the world have seen one of the famous cows. Are you thinking of decorating a cow figurine of your own? Instructions

    • 1

Find a cow figurine to paint. Your local craft store may have ceramic cow bisque figurines, which are suitable for painting with acrylic paints. You can also order unpainted ceramic bisque cow figurines online (see Resources).

    • 2

Gather acrylic paints and a brush. A small, round-bristled nylon brush is a good choice. Select the colors of acrylic paints you want to use. Some ceramic bisque cows come in kits with a brush and paints included.

    • 3

Decide on a theme. Do you want to paint the cow in a pattern comprised of your favorite colors? Perhaps you'd like to try a checkered pattern or polka dots. Or would you rather create a cow character, such as 'Super Cow,' with a cape and mask, or 'Clown Cow,' with a red nose and a clown suit? Use your imagination. Think about how you want to paint your cow before you begin.

    • 4

Spread paper on the tabletop or workbench where you will be painting. Open the paint and dip the tip of the brush into it. Zigzag the brush across the paper to spread the paint evenly over the brush tip. Apply the paint to the figurine with light, short strokes, going against the texture of the ceramic. Allow each color to dry before applying the next. Wash the brush in soap and water.

Consider planning a cow painting party with your family or friends. Gather brushes, paint and cow figurines. Choose some cow-related snacks and beverages, such as cheese and milkshakes, and let the originality flow.
