Select a photograph of a baby. You will use this photograph to determine the proportions of the baby's body parts, such as body thickness and length of its arms and legs. Resize the picture to the size of the baby that you would like to make, using your computer or a copying machine.
Make an armature for the baby using 22 gauge wire. Measure a piece of wire that will be one inch longer than twice the length of the doll. Clip it off the roll of wire. Fold the wire in half so that there is a loop on top. Twist the wire from the top downward, until you reach the area just below the doll's arms, where the heart would be. Cut a single strand of wire off the wire spool that is approximately the length of the baby's arms. Bend each side of the double stranded wire over the middle of the single stranded arm wire. Continue twisting the two strands together a few more times, until slightly above where the legs would start.
Wrap the armature with polymer clay. Use the photograph of the real baby as a guide for the proportions of your mini baby. The body thickness, thickness of the arms and legs, and size of the head should match the photograph. Do not sculpt the hands and feet at this point. You will add them later.
Smooth out the clay with your fingers and the clay sculpting tools so that no seams are showing.
Sculpt the eyes. A baby appears to have large eyes since the eyes remain the same size throughout life. Since the baby is smaller in size than an adult, the baby's eyes are proportionately larger than the eyes of an adult. Draw a very light line across the center of the face, from left to right, and another very light line across the center of the face, up and down. Using a blunt sculpting tool, gently press in two eye sockets just below the center horizontal line. Be careful not to press too deep. Using a toothpick or fine sculpting tool, sculpt the outlines of the eyes.
Add the nose. Add a very tiny ball of clay just below the eyes. Use a clay smoothing tool to blend it upward toward the space between the eyes. Use the toothpick or a fine sculpting tool to add the nostrils.
Sculpt the mouth. Halfway between the eyes and the bottom of the head, gently press in to make the mouth. Using your tools, make subtle top and bottom lips.
Sculpt the ears. Ears go on the sides of the head between the levels of the midpoint of the eyes and just above the mouth. If you have enough clay on the sides of the head to form into ears, you can use the clay sculpting tool to form the ears. You may need to add clay for the ears. Use your fine clay sculpting tool for the ear canals and details on the ear lobes.
Place the dent below the nose, wrinkles on the arms and legs, and other skin folds that newborns have. Use the photograph of the baby as a guide. The more details you add, the more realistic your mini baby will look.
Preheat your oven to 275 F or whatever temperature is recommended for your brand of polymer clay. Place the baby on parchment paper on a cookie sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Allow the baby to cool for at least 30 minutes before continuing.
Use sandpaper to sand any areas that are not smooth. Dust it with an old paint brush. If needed, you may gently and lightly rub the mini baby with acetone nail polish remover, then quickly rub off any excess.
Sculpt the hands and feet. You will add clay to the ends of the arms and legs for these. The hands and feet are added after the doll was partially baked because they tend to turn brown if baked the entire time. Separate each finger and toe, and round them out. Gently use a wood carving tool to make small dents for the fingernails and toenails. Sculpt the lines into the hands.
Bake the baby again at 275 F or the recommended baking temperature for your clay on the parchment paper for 20 minutes.
Snip off the extra wire on top of the baby's head using wire cutters.
The baby is now ready to paint. Use a size 0 brush for the lips and to add tone to the cheeks. You can also use the brush to paint the whites of the eyes, or leave them flesh toned. Use the head of the straight pin to paint the pupils. Use the tip of the straight pin to paint the irises.
Your baby is now ready for hair. Most newborns have only a little bit of hair. Use a very small amount of 527 glue on the baby's head, and apply the hair. Any extra glue that gets on top of the hair can be gently wiped away with acetone nail polish remover. Your baby is now ready to greet the world!
