How to Make a Bronze Statue From a Live Model

The depiction of the human body in fine art dates back to the earliest forms of human beings who created votive fertility figures from stone. Thousands of years later, the Ancient Greeks achieved the heights of naturalistic representation of the human figure in sculpture, many of which were created using bronze. The Greeks pioneered the technique of lost wax casting, which can still be used today to create bronze sculptures of the human figure.

Instructions

    • 1

Create your sculpture of the live model using clay, wood or stone. Once this sculpture is complete, you can begin the process of casting it in bronze.

    • 2

Paint a rubber skin on the surface of your finished sculpture. Remove the sculpture and fill the inside of the mold with wax to create a second mold about ¼ inch thick.

    • 3

Apply sprues for channeling the bronze and airs for dispersing the displaced air. Investment plaster is poured into the inside of the wax replica and on the outside of the wax.

    • 4

Pierce the wax surface with special nails to maintain the gap between the two layers of plaster. Heat the piece in a kiln to melt the wax out of the piece, this gives the process its name of lost wax casting.

    • 5

Pour molten bronze into the sprues of the sculpture quickly. When the metal hardens the molds can be broken to reveal the bronze beneath.

    • 6

Remove the sprues and airs and begin the process of fettling to remove any imperfections from the piece. You can add a patina to the finished sculpture.
