What are the shabbat candles called?

The two candles used to usher in the Sabbath on Friday evening are often referred to as "Shabbat candles." However, they may also be called:

1. Neirot Shabbat: In Hebrew, "Neirot" means "candles," and "Shabbat" refers to the Sabbath. When used together, "Neirot Shabbat" simply translates to "Sabbath candles."

2. Nerot Olam: This term, also Hebrew, means "eternal light." It symbolizes the everlasting nature of the Sabbath. Using "Nerot Olam" to refer to the Shabbat candles is an expression of the importance and sanctity of the day.

3. Shabbat Lichteren: This Yiddish expression means "Sabbath lights." It is commonly used in Yiddish-speaking Jewish communities.

4. Friday Night Candles: While not a specifically Jewish term, "Friday Night Candles" is a descriptive phrase that refers to the candles lit on Friday evening to welcome in the Sabbath.
