Drake encountered several Spanish explorers during his circumnavigation, including Juan de Fuca, who had sailed along the Pacific coast of North America a few years earlier. Drake also captured Spanish ships and seized their cargo, which led to tensions and conflicts between him and the Spanish authorities in the region.
Pirates and privateers
Drake operated as a privateer, authorized by the English crown to attack Spanish ships and settlements in the Americas. During his journeys, he encountered other English and French pirates and privateers, some of whom joined his expeditions. These individuals often shared information, resources, and strategies for successful raiding and plundering.
Mutineers
On his circumnavigation, Drake faced a mutiny led by Thomas Doughty, a high-ranking officer on the expedition. Doughty and his supporters disagreed with Drake's leadership and challenged his authority. Drake had Doughty tried and executed, demonstrating his strong resolve and determination in maintaining control over his crew.
Explorers and adventurers
Drake's voyages also brought him into contact with other explorers and adventurers of his time, including the Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan, who had previously circumnavigated the globe. These interactions allowed Drake to learn from the experiences and knowledge of others, contributing to his own successful expedition.
