Before the Saddledome was built, the Flames played at the Stampede Corral, a multipurpose facility that was originally constructed in 1950 as a rodeo arena. However, by the late 1990s, the Corral had become outdated and inadequate for NHL standards.
In response, the Calgary Flames ownership group, led by Darryl Katz, proposed building a new arena to replace the Corral. The project was approved by the City of Calgary in 1998, and construction began the following year.
The Saddledome opened its doors on October 15, 2000, with a capacity of 19,289 spectators. The arena has since been expanded to its current capacity of 19,500.
The Saddledome is one of the most modern and technologically advanced arenas in the world. It features a state-of-the-art sound system, video displays, and lighting system. The arena also has a variety of amenities for fans, including restaurants, bars, and shops.
Since opening in 2000, the Saddledome has hosted numerous events besides Flames games, including concerts, conventions, and trade shows. It is also home to the Calgary Hitmen, a junior ice hockey team in the Western Hockey League (WHL).
