What is an altar boy?

An altar boy or altar server is a boy or young man who assists the priest and deacon during Christian liturgical services, particularly in the Roman Catholic Church, Oriental Orthodoxy, Lutheranism, Anglicanism, Reformed Churches and some other denominations, such as the Methodist Church and the Mar Thoma Syrian Church, which employ the services of altar boys.
