Why did sumerians build pyramids?

Sumerians did not build pyramids. The building of pyramids is mostly associated with ancient Egypt, where the pyramids were built as tombs for pharaohs. The Sumerians, on the other hand, built structures such as ziggurats, which were stepped temple structures.
