Is fiddler on the roof based a true story?

The musical "Fiddler on the Roof" is largely based on the stories of Sholem Aleichem, a Jewish author who wrote about life in the Pale of Settlement in the Russian Empire around the turn of the 20th century. Many of the plots and characters in the musical "Fiddler on the Roof" are adapted from these stories.
