Why is putting a tattoo on your skin bad if you are Muslim?

Tattoos are not explicitly forbidden in the Quran, they are, however, haram (forbidden) because it alters God's creation and causes unnecessary pain through mutilation (altering Allah's creation), which Allah considers a sin.
