How to Make Your Own Marqee Sign

A marquee sign is one that typically hangs over a theater, venue or church, displaying what events or shows are featured. The sign has a blank default face that can be arranged to show custom messages made up by interchangeable letters and numbers. Specially made marquee signs often feature the represented venue's name in elaborate text, and others even have lights displayed inside and around the sign. But for a simple marquee sign, you can design and create your own.

Things You'll Need

  • 50-inch by 70-inch sheet of aluminum or plastic
  • Strips of wood molding (for edging corners)
  • Large sheet of plywood (roughly the same size as the aluminum/plastic)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Tape measure
  • Shears

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the wooden molding into strips to fit the length of your sign (70 inches).

    • 2

Lay the aluminum or plastic sheet flat on ground. Glue the first strip of molding lengthwise across the top edge of the sign with the "lip" facing downward. Use the plywood to help you keep the line straight if necessary.

    • 3

Measure 8 inches down the sign, and glue another strip across the board with the "lip" facing the other direction. This is your first row of letters. Measure another inch down, and start a second row.

    • 4

Repeat the process until there are ten 8-inch rows, spaced 1 inch apart. Make sure each row has the "lips" of the molding facing toward each other.

    • 5

Allow the glue to dry. If you wish, you may repeat this process on a second sheet to make a double-sided sign.

    • 6

Glue the aluminum/plastic sheet to the wooden frame. You can order 8-inch letters to fit your board at http://www.letterperfectinc.net.
