How to Use Architectural Markers to Color Plans

Architectural markers are high in quality and come in a wide range of colors, which makes them ideal for use on plans and planning maps. The variety of colors means you won't have trouble coming up with enough colors for the different zoning areas, land features and other landmarks that you need to cover in a comprehensive plan. A 20 to 25 color set should do the trick, and you can get a set of markers made by a reputable company at any art supply store. The chisel markers are best for full-size plans in which you need to cover a lot of area.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin by making a list of all the features you will be coloring in. These will include zones (such as residential, mixed and industrial), landscape features (wetlands, creeks) and any other important features (parks, greenways).

    • 2

Assign a color to each feature and create a key for the map. There are some conventions for planning maps, such as using green for recreational land uses, purple for industrial, yellow for single family and red for commercial. Place the key in a non-critical area of the plan.

    • 3

Color in the plan with the markers. Start by outlining the edges of area to be colored to maximize neatness, and then fill in the rest of the area.
