How to Cut Large Mirrors

If you have accidentally chipped off a corner of a large mirror, don't throw it away just yet, because you can cut it down to a smaller piece (or pieces). Learning how to cut a large mirror is easy, provided you have the proper tools. Although you do not need a professional glazier for the job, you still need to be cautious, because mirrors with sharp edges can injure you.

Things You'll Need

  • Safety goggles
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Small and large towel
  • Washable glass marker
  • Contact paper
  • Masking tape
  • Gloves
  • Wide-mouthed garbage can
  • Glass cutter

Instructions

    • 1

Put on goggles and safety gloves before starting your project.

    • 2

Use rubbing alcohol and a small towel for cleaning the mirror of dust and dirt particles.

    • 3

Lay out a large towel on the work area (which must be a flat surface). This will protect the back of the mirror from scratching. If you want, you can cover the back using contact paper.

    • 4

Draw the cut line on the mirror using a marker. It is very difficult to distinguish a marker line from its reflection on the mirror; therefore, you should stick a thick masking tape on the line to make it conspicuous enough to give a guiding ledge for the cutter.

    • 5

Lubricate the glass cutter using oil.

    • 6

Exert consistent pressure to score the glass while it is on the towel. Exert just enough pressure to make a thin, visible line.

    • 7

Over a garbage can, break the mirror from the score line. This will keep mirror slivers off the towel, which can scratch the mirror's back.
