Graphic novels, traditional comics and Web comics use digital character design to create more visually vivid characters. The character design of graphic novels evolved from traditional methods of design and, as a result, still include many traditional methods, particularly sketching, before moving onto designing with 2D image-editing computer software.
Animators rely on digital techniques for much of the animation process, including character design. The beginning stages of character design typically involve 2D sketches, either traditionally done or on the computer. Some 2D sketches are fleshed out in greater detail through use of computers to become 3D.
Video and computer games rely on effective character design to create appealing avatars appropriate for the particular game's genre. Some designs start as traditionally created sketches, but all character designs must reach the digital stage and typically end with the creation of detailed 3D drawings.
