How to Make a Serigraph

Serigraphs, or screen prints, are the easiest and most efficient way to make mass-produced art and design. Serigraphs can be used to print on numerous types of materials, from fabric to paper to some types of vinyl, depending on the ink. Serigraphs themselves are just a silk (or more commonly part polyester) screen stretched over a frame with some material blocking out the areas of the image where ink is not to be printed. One way to make a serigraph is to simply cut out the design of the material blocking the ink

Instructions

    • 1

Set the frame down on a flat surface and drape the silk screen over it.

    • 2

Staple the screen halfway down one side of the frame (not at a corner). Then stretch the screen so that the fabric is taught inside the frame and staple the side of the frame opposite from the first staple.

    • 3

Work your way around the screen, stretching the fabric and stapling opposite sides. Work out to the corners so that they are stapled last.

    • 4

Place the artwork on a surface smaller than the frame, and then place the screen on top of the artwork so that the fabric is firm against the artwork.

    • 5

Trace the artwork with a pencil.

    • 6

Take the brush and carefully cover up with Mod-Podge any areas of the screen that you don't wish ink to pass through. Essentially, paint a "negative" image of the artwork, leaving any areas empty where you wish there to be ink.

    • 7

Wait for the serigraph to dry to complete the creation.
