Solar System Mobile Projects

Creating a mobile of the solar system is a popular way to show off your knowledge of the planets and other celestial bodies that call the solar system home. While most mobiles will include similar features, they are in no way all the same. There are a wide array of ways to capture the solar system in mobile form. Consider your skills and available materials before selecting the project that is most appealing to you.
  1. Picture Mobile

    • Use actual images of the objects that fill our solar system to create your mobile. Locate pictures of the planets and any other desired features, such as natural satellites, suns, or moons, that you would like to place on your mobile. Look in photo-rich magazines, such as National Geographic, or collect images from the NASA Planetary Image website. If you are artistic, consider drawing the planets yourself using colored pencils, markers, chalk, or paint. Size each picture using a photo copier or image editing tools on the computer so they are in appropriate proportion to each other, or simply make them all of approximately the same size for a less realistic yet equally aesthetically pleasing option. Print your images onto card stock or thick photo paper, or glue clipped images onto think paper to ensure they are strong enough to serve as mobile features. Clip around your printed or glued planets and suspend them from a clothes hanger or series of dowel rods using translucent string, such as fishing line, both of which are available at the hardware store.

    Orb Mobile

    • Make your mobile more complex by crafting your planets out of Styrofoam orbs. Purchase Styrofoam balls of different sizes along with a rectangular sheet of Styrofoam, Styrofoam safe paint, a dowel rod, yarn and wooden skewers from a craft supply store. Reference a science text book or the NASA Planetary Image website to review images of the planets before painting. When referencing these sources, also seek information about planetary size as well as the distances between the planets and use this information to make your mobile more scientifically accurate. To make the painting process easier, spear each orb with a small wooden rod and stick them into a flat piece of Styrofoam to hold them up while you paint. After painting, use a long needle or your wooden spear to run a piece of yarn through each each orb. Suspend your painted planets from your hanger or dowel rods to finish your mobile.

    Fabric Mobile

    • Make your mobile a quilted work of art. To craft your mobile, purchase fabric in prints that closely match each planet's atmosphere. Look in fabric store scrap bins or at a home design fabric store for textiles with prints appropriate for this purpose. Create circles in the proper dimensions to represent each planet, cutting two circles of the same size from each piece of fabric. Using a needle and thread, sew your circles right sides together, or stitch around the circles with a sewing machine. Leave a one inch opening. Right your fabric and stuff each creation with fiber fill. Slip the end of a piece of yarn into each before sewing it the rest of the way by hand. Add more detail to your stuffed planets using buttons or beads to create craters, moons, or other prominent planetary features. Suspend your filled creations from your hanger or dowels to finish your mobile.
