Look for plans for a DIY metal project on the Internet at sites such as Metal Project Plans and Miller Welding. Projects include making such things as wine racks, welded stumps, chairs, tables, grills, chain mail and gauntlets. These projects require various levels of expertise to complete, but may can be done by both beginners and advanced metal workers. Create plans for your own projects to make unique tables, chairs and artwork.
Cut and weld pieces of scrap metal together to create homemade picture frames. These are great gifts and can be made unique by using different sizes and varieties of metal. Weld wire to the back when finished so that the picture may be hung on the wall. If you are unfamiliar with welding techniques, consult Popular Mechanics magazine online or take a welding class at a local metal shop.
Create your own yard art by welding together pieces of metal and scraps. You can cut the pieces first to create shapes before welding them together, or simply make an abstract art piece using what you have on hand. Smaller sculptures can also be created this way to keep in the house or to give away as gifts.
Forge pieces of steel or iron to create uniquely shaped objects if you have access to a forge and anvil. DIY blacksmithing projects include making fire pokers, hooks, wrought-iron fences and chisels. Blacksmithing project plans are not readily available and require more of a feel to them than welding plans. Work on bending, twisting, flattening and curving the metal to create unique objects and shapes. If you do not have access to blacksmithing equipment, consider taking a class at a local metal shop to learn the skill.
