How to Make Your Own Wood Dye With Watercolors

Watercolors are usually solid blocks of water-soluble paints that you can use as wood dye. Because water-based dyes are thin, you can use this mixture to enhance the overall grain look of flamed maple and quilted maple for a semi-transparent finish. This gives your wood an aged but beautiful look if done properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 12 ounces of denatured alcohol into a mixing container.

    • 2

Pour 1 ounce of dried watercolor into the denatured alcohol. You can change the amount of watercolor you put into the alcohol. The more you add, the darker and less translucent the stain will become. However, if you add more, make sure your measurements are precise in the event you need to make more. Knowing exactly how much denatured alcohol and watercolor you mix together will help you color match a second batch.

    • 3

Stir the mixture with a stirring stick until the watercolor fully dissolves in the alcohol.

    • 4

Shake the mixture before each use to ensure a consistent color.
