How to Paint a Plate Studio

Pottery painting studios make is possible for visitors, regardless of their art experience, to design and paint their own ceramic dishes. Plates, bowls, mugs and serving pieces are available in a bisque state (clay that has already been fired and can accept paint, called "glaze") and painters have a rainbow of colors from which to choose. Tables and space to work and professional guidance are available for a fee. The final kiln firing takes place at the studio when you're finished, and just a few days later you can return to pick up your completed piece.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a piece of bisque that you would like to paint. Most studios have a variety of sizes and shapes available, including round plates, square dishes and serving platters. Select the colors that you would like to use based on finished examples in the store and the palette that is available.

    • 2

Wipe the plate with a damp sponge to remove dust.

    • 3

Pour small amounts of glaze onto a palette. Dip a clean brush into the glaze and apply it to the piece keeping the brush moving smoothly across the surface of the plate. Avoid gloppy build-up of glaze and wait for this coat to dry before applying a second.

    • 4

Apply another coat of glaze directly on top of the first using the same colors and smooth brush strokes. Allow this coat to dry before finishing with a clear finishing coat.

    • 5

Set your piece aside to dry while you clean up your area. Studio staff will fire it in a kiln. Most studios have the piece ready for you to pick up in three to four days.
