How to Mix Tint With Base

Tint is used to make a color darker by adding black -- or making a color lighter, by adding white. The base is the starting point, or the color that will be made darker or lighter. The amount of the color added to the base will progress the base color through the colorscale, in the desired direction.

Instructions

    • 1

Place all of the materials needed next to the canvas, so that they are accessible. Squeeze the base paint on one side of the cardboard paper, and the tint on the other side of the cardboard paper.

    • 2

Dip the brush in the base paint, and use the color on the canvas to create the base. Lay it out evenly in order to cover the canvas completely.

    • 3

Use the other clean brush to mix the tint with the base. Dip the brush in the tint paint and gently brush it in on top of the layer of the base. Use a small amount, and watch the color as it starts changing either to darker or lighter. Play around with it, until you find your desired shade.
