Lathe Etching Tools

A lathe is a unique woodworking tool that allows you to create a work of art by peeling away layers of wood to create a symmetrically rounded object. Whether you are working on the handle of a goblet or a fancy stair railing design, etching tools are a great way to create those small, intricate details in your work. Because etching tools aren't specifically sold for lathes, you can experiment with printmaking and woodworking etching tools. Make sure you select one that is strong enough to endure the spinning lathe.
  1. Burnisher Etching Tool

    • This tool, generally used for printmaking, can create a unique look on your wooden work of art. The burnisher has one smooth side and a curved tip. Because the burnisher is made from steel used to manipulate zinc plates during the printmaking process, it is strong enough to endure the battering of a lathe.

    Scribe Etching Tool

    • This printmaking tool is composed of a fine tip and thin handle, and looks similar to a metal pencil. With practice and learned control, the scribe etching tool allows you to create fine lines on your wooden project.

    Double Ended Etching Needle

    • This tool will allow you to make incredibly thin lines on your wooden art project. Made of solid steel, this double ended etching tool is only seven inches long.

    Vee Thread Cutting Tool

    • This lathe tool is narrow enough to give you the freedom to create minor adjustments during the lathing process. Its narrow, pointed head allows you to create angles and ridges in the wood that are difficult to create with most lathe tools.

    Internal Screw-Cutting Tool

    • Upon looking at the internal screw-cutting tool, you will realize that it is bent rightward. This internal turning tool lets you create ridges and designs inside of the wood you're turning, allowing you to give your piece a unique, etched look both inside and out.
