Use magnetic paint only in well-ventilated areas. Always read and follow the instructions and precautions found on the label of the paint. Carefully monitor the surface for drips while painting. Smooth surfaces rather than textured work the best for magnetic paint. Adhere to drying times for a smooth, consistent surface. Never add water to magnetic paint -- it will ruin the integrity of the paint.
The application and usage of metallic paint is most effective when two to three coats of the metallic primer are used as the base coat, followed by two layers of the topcoat (preferably chalkboard paint, oil-based paint or latex paint). Water- or alcohol-based paint is thin and will dilute the metallic paint; it can also cause the finish to appear bumpy. Allow each layer of paint time to dry completely between each layer applied; two to three hours is an adequate drying time. Magnetic paint is intended solely for indoor use, as it can be ruined by moisture.
The magnetic properties of the magnetic paint are slightly less powerful than those of a traditional magnetic surface. For best results, the choice of magnets used on the surface should be flat, lightweight magnets, with a strong magnetic attraction. Each coat of paint added to the surface strengthens the magnetic paint surface.
Magnetic paint can be used to bring new life into ordinarily plain household items. An old picture frame can be mounted upon a board. Use the frame backing, or cut a board to the same measurements as the frame. Paint the frame in any desired color, and then paint the board with the magnetic paint, followed by chalkboard paint (apply two to three coats of each, using a foam roller the thickness of one-half inch to one-quarter inch, with low fiber nap; allow to dry completely between each coat). Attach the frame to the board, and you have created an ideal message center.
An entire new look can be created when an entire wall is painted with magnetic paint. Pictures and photos can be added and replaced with ease, allowing for many designs, varieties and appearances for one room. This would be ideal in a child's bedroom or a wall where guests can add elements to the wall. There is no stopping the endless possibilities of magnetic paint.
