Types of Secondary Packaging

Most commercial products, from prescription pills to canned beverages, use two kinds of packaging: primary and secondary. Primary packaging is that which is closest to the product itself. In the case of pills, this would be the plastic bottle, while for beverages, it is the can. Secondary packaging is the outer layer that holds the packaged product. In the case of both prescriptions and beverages, this would be a box, typically with the product logo and graphics.
  1. Paper

    • One of the most common types of secondary packaging uses thick card stock paper to make boxes. Other paper secondary packaging includes express boxes for postal shipping and outer sleeves for some CDs and DVDs. Paper secondary package usually uses a liner on the outside as either a protective coating or a laminate to bring out the graphics and design printed on the package.

    Cardboard

    • Often more durable and heavier than paper, cardboard is used in much the same way. It's not as thick as other types of secondary packaging, but can stand up to most expected damage the product may take and, in some cases, can display graphics and images almost as well as paper.

    Fiberboard

    • Corrugated fiberboard is also typically manufactured into a box for secondary packaging. Since fiberboard is thicker than most paper, with some support stuffed between double lining, it's less often used for decoration and more often for bulk packaging purposes. Manufactured to be bigger and more durable than paper, fiberboard boxes often pack heavier items, or larger amounts than paper ones.

    Plastic

    • One of the most common products in the world, plastic is a highly versatile substance used for everything from vending machine toys to computer motherboards. Thin plastic covers are common over commercial entertainment products (such as CDs and DVDs), while thick, molded plastic is common to products with include external parts that may slide around during shipping; typically, these have paper packaging included in the plastic. Plastic is versatile enough that it is commonly used in both primary and secondary packaging.
