Tattoo Writing Styles

Script tattoo can be a single word or several sentences. You can include your last name, a passage from your favorite book or quote from a film to represent your personal characteristics or pay homage to a loved one or hero. Because the placement of the tattoo is just as important as the tattoo itself, keep in mind that the longer or more detailed the script, the more space it may require to display properly. As with any tattoo, take time to consider the its meaning, its writing style and its appropriate placement before undergoing the tattoo process.
  1. Calligraphy

    • Calligraphy script is any type of beautiful writing that flows together and displays elegant detail. It is an older and more traditional form of cursive script that requires an experienced artist. You can decide to leave it as simple and basic black lines or incorporate shading and colors to give it texture and vibrancy. Take into account that some calligraphy is more extravagant than others, and longer passages can be jumbled and harder to read.

    Sailor

    • Sailor font is one of the oldest forms of Western tattoo script. This font includes block letters, each standing alone and either left empty, partially filled or completely filled in with black or colored ink. It is the ideal font for scripts that require each letter to be separated, such as words on your knuckles or words that are to be displayed vertically. Some ideal spots for vertical script tattoos are down your arm, leg or spine.

    Graffiti

    • Graffiti script is a more modern version of calligraphy because the letters often flow together to form a beautiful image. However, some graffiti fonts can be more difficult to read because it is almost a exclusive written language unto itself and because the beauty of the image often trumps the words displayed. You can choose to use basic graffiti script, which essentially mirrors a solid black marker, or incorporate shading and colors to mirror spray paint.

    Personalized

    • The easiest way to ensure your scripted tattoo is unique and as personal as possible is to design the font yourself. If you are tattooing the name of a family member, consider having her write her own name on a piece of paper and then having that image transferred into tattoo form. Just keep in mind that you or your loved one may have to write the words dozens of times before the image is suitable for a lifelong tattoo.
