How to Preserve Inkjet Prints

Preservation of inkjet prints stops fading and discoloration. These techniques work for older or new prints. It is important to stabilize the ink and protect the paper from moisture, heat and damage. To preserve an inkjet print, begin with premium photo paper. For artwork or documents that are going to be preserved, use a premium photo paper that resists sun damage and tearing. Set the print quality at 600 dots per inch (dpi) or higher.

Frame the print behind glass. A local framer can make a gorgeous presentation with an acid-free mat board and a quality wood frame. Museum quality glass guarantees protection for a hundred or more years if the print is kept out of direct sunlight and avoids water damage. A traditional frame may be the best way to preserve print. The framer can also suggest alternative and new styles of framing to best display the inkjet print.

Laminate your print with cold press laminate. Most office supply stores with a print shop have cold lamination machines. This process is inexpensive and is finished in a few minutes. A plastic sleeve is pressed onto the print and seals it together. This permanent process is highly durable and waterproof. It works best as a place mat or for handling purposes such as a printed lunch menu.

Mount the inkjet print onto canvas. Showcase your inkjet print as an art piece, like a painting. Many services online can scan your image and reprint it onto canvas or simply mount your print on canvas using photo adhesive.

Store the inkjet print between two pieces of acid-free tissue paper in an archival box. Archival boxes with acid free tissue paper placed in a flat file or on a shelf is the best way to protect fine quality and museum quality prints and documents. Art supply stores have archival quality paper, boxes, and can help with purchasing the right supplies. Photo albums also work well to preserve the print. They come large enough to accommodate most size prints.

Spray your inkjet print with a photo spray adhesive. Your local art supply store will have many photo sprays to choose from depending on your desired finish. Apply the photo spray outdoors on a clean surface. Shake the can well. Hold the can above the print and start by spraying a fine mist. Move the can slightly side to side to disperse the adhesive evenly.
