Great Graphic Design Projects to Build Portfolios

Graphic designers must have an outstanding resume like any job seeker, but they can set themselves apart from the crowd with a sparkling portfolio, comprised of samples of their best work. Here are several great graphic design projects that may be included in a portfolio. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the graphic design field is poised for growth, but there will be keen competition for jobs with many talented individuals competing for work.
  1. The Design Process

    • The graphic design process begins with a design brief, a document describing the project and it's intended use.The designer then researches the project, gathering information necessary to execute the design, then generates ideas for the project. Sketches are executed from the ideas. Comprehensive designs, called comps for short, are developed from the sketches. Clients review the comps and suggest changes. The designer then executes the final design and delivers graphic files to the client. Graphic designers are expert in use of design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and In Design. In the case of a portfolio project, the designer is their own client.

    Book Cover

    • Book covers are a fun challenge for the graphic designer. The successful book cover catches the eye from a distance and instantly communicates the essence of the book to a potential buyer. Designers must consider the subject of the book and the target audience. Research includes a review of covers in the genre. The designer must choose colors, type, and in some cases photographic and illustrated elements for the book cover. The best designers have the confidence to trust their instincts and ideas while fulfilling the assignment

    Packaging

    • A well-rounded portfolio includes a packaging design for products such as a soap box, candy bar, or toy box. It is essential to research packaging for the products and industry that the design is intended for. The designer must understand the target market and create a design accordingly. Packaging requirements must be considered, for example food labels require nutrition information. Other packaging design elements include company logo, product description, branding copy, and in come cases instructions. Space should be left for a bar code.

    Web Site Design

    • Graphic designers think of web sites as interactive magazines. They create a master design plan for site, defining the overall look and feel. Each page uses a variety of type, photos, illustration, color and texture while staying true to the master design plan. Designers must create web pages that are easy to use and understand. Web designers use programs such as Dreamweaver and Flash, but many of the individual graphic elements are created in Photoshop and Illustrator. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, designers with web site experience have the best job prospects.

    Corporate Logo

    • The stars and stripes flag is the logo of the United States

Central to the whole graphic design field is the logo. Companies and brands are represented in the public eye by logos, comprised of shapes, typography, color and images. A good logo is easily recognized. The best logos are timeless and inspire trust. Logos must be appropriate for the product or service they represent. Successful logos include the Nike swoosh and the Ford logo.
