What Are the Tallest Monuments?

The construction abilities of the human race has led it to build some incredible monuments. Dedicated to religious figures, historic events, or important historical figures, the construction of some has reached an impressive scale. This includes those built to a great height, with a number of countries around the world boasting statues and memorials that rank in the list of tallest monuments.
  1. GateWay Arch

    • At 630 feet tall, the Gateway Arch is located in St. Louis, Missouri, with its construction completed in 1965. The monument serves as a reminder to the city's history as a gateway location used by pioneers heading west.

    Washington Monument

    • Constructed in honor of the first U.S. President, George Washington, the Washington Monument stands at 555 feet tall. The monument has stood in place since 1884 in Washington, DC.

    Spring Temple Buddha

    • This statue built in honor of Lord Buddha stands in Zhaocun Township, Henan, China. Rising to a height of 420 feet, it stands as one of the tallest statues in the world, with its construction finalised in 2002.

    Ushiku Daibutsu Buddha Statue

    • The Ushiku Daibutsu Buddha statue in Ushiku, Japan stands at around 394 feet tall. One of the tallest bronze Buddha statues in the world, it has stood in place since 1995.

    Spire of Dublin

    • The Spire of Dublin stands in Dublin, Ireland, rising to a height of around 394 feet. Built in commemoration of the millennium celebrations, it was not actually completed until 2003, and its design has led to it becoming known as the Spike.

    Buddhist Statue of Guanyin

    • The Buddhist Statue of Guanyin rises to a height of 354 feet, and stands in Sanya, China. Completed in 2005, the statue was constructed in tribute to Guanyin, the Bodhisattva associated with compassion.

    Statue of Huangdi and Yandi

    • At around 338 feet tall, the statue of Huangdi and Yandi is located in Xinzheng, China. Its inauguration took place around 2007, and the monument depicts the faces of two famous Chinese Emperors.

    Motherland Statue

    • The Motherland statue in Kiev, Ukraine was constructed in commemoration of the Second World War, and forms part of the Museum of the Great Patriotic War. The overall height of the memorial stands at 335 feet, with construction completed in 1981.

    Statue of Peter the Great

    • Russia built a monument to one of its famous leaders, Peter the Great, which rises to an overall height of around 315 feet. Standing beside the Moskva River in Moscow, construction of the statue was completed in 1997.

    Statue of Liberty

    • Given as a gift to the people of America by France, the Statue of Liberty has stood in place since 1886. The overall height of the monument is 305 feet, and stands on Liberty Island in New York.
