How to Review a Webcomic

The Internet provides an easy way for many people who would otherwise not have the ability to be published, due to having a niche market, lack of time, or other factors, to be able to share their work with the world. Webcomics, or comics of any type that are published on the Internet, are common. Like any other creative work, it is possible to review a webcomic, and the process for reviewing a comic is very like that for reviewing any other written work.

Instructions

    • 1

Read the entire webcomic. This can be a challenge, as some webcomics have been online and updated for years, but you must be able to sound authoritative and you must have read the entire comic in order to be an expert. Take many notes about the progression of the artwork, addition of color, parts that don't make sense, changes in the format, progression of the story and any other aspects that you find worth discussing. In addition, copy the URL of any particular pages that you may wish to discuss so that you can link to them in your review, making it easy for the reader to follow along. Reviews for webcomics are typically also published online. (see Reference 1)

    • 2

Describe the webcomic to begin your review. Noting the genre is very important, as well as describing the general plot and main characters without spoiling the story for a potential reader. State the intended audience, mentioning the target age group or any specific interests that the comic appeals to. It is necessary to let the reader know what type of webcomic you are reviewing. Noting the style of the artwork is a good addition. (see References 1 and 2)

    • 3

Discuss the webcomic, using your notes from reading to help you. Does the story progress well? Does the technique of the artist improve? Describe how the plot (or even lack of plot) develops, using specific pages to back up your opinion. If the story or genre seem inconsistent to you, describe where inconsistencies occur. It is important to note whether the creator is successful with his goal in creating the comic; for instance, if the comic is intended to be humorous, state whether or not it is actually funny. (see Reference 1)

    • 4

Describe whether the artwork is appealing and whether it shows skill, backing up your opinion with specific observations about the artwork. In addition, note whether the panels make sense and the general comic format.

    • 5

Add details about the creator's credentials, other comics, art and writing, or any other information that is relevant, if desired. (see Reference 1)

    • 6

State your overall opinion regarding the webcomic and whether or not you would recommend the comic to someone else, or if you would recommend it to a specific audience. Be concise and straightforward. (see References 1 and 3)
