How to Identify an Indian Silver Pin

Identification of Native American Indian silver jewelry can be challenging, even if the silver item has a hallmark on the back. There are four main Indian or Native American Indian tribes that, for the most part, are known to make silver jewelry --- the Navajo, Hopi, Zuni and Santa Domingo Indian. The majority of Native American Indian silver jewelry commonly found today dates from between the 1970s to present time. Finding an older, antique piece of Native American Indian jewelry is rare, due to its collectible nature.

Instructions

  1. Identification

    • 1

Polish the Indian silver pin, front and back. Pay special attention to any areas you see that might be identifying hallmarks, stamps, numbers, words or letters.

    • 2

Look with the magnifying glass or jeweler's loupe at the back of the pin. Write on the notepad any hallmark letters, initials, symbols, numbers and words. Make extra notes about the type or style of the hallmark shape if you are unable to accurately draw it out, if there is one.

    • 3

Consult a reference book for the initial, or initials, of the hallmark, if present. If there is a hallmark symbol or stamp, look in the reference book under the symbols and stamp area. This should give you an accurate identification of the family, or Native American silversmith artist, who made your Indian silver pin. If the hallmark or initials of the pin do not show up in the reference book, then proceed to Step 4. Otherwise, you should be finished identifying the maker of your silver Indian pin.

    • 4

Take a digital picture of the pin's front and back. Try to take at least three pictures of it: one of the front and two of the back, taking a macro or close-up picture, if possible, of the hallmark stamp area.
