How Do I Develop Storyboards?

Storyboards are graphic organizers such as a series of illustrations or images displayed for the purpose of visualizing an animation, motion graphic or interactive media sequence to provide a visual impression of the finished product. To develop a storyboard, you need an idea or concept of a story that you can break down into sections and display on paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a plan for your story, going into detail on what your characters will do, what will happen in your story and how this will develop.

    • 2

Draw a series of frames on paper with a pencil and ruler. Make the frames a decent size, such as 10-by-10 centimeters, but change the sizes to fit in with the dialogue and artwork.

    • 3

Write your story as a script but break it down into sections and specify which sections of dialogue are going to go into each frame.

    • 4

Sketch the artwork from your story into each frame, adjusting the frames to work with the story so none of the important parts of the story are missing.

    • 5

Draw the outline of the artwork in each frame with pen. Add color using inks or colored pencils to each of your frames.

    • 6

Proofread your storyboard and read through your story to see if there is anything you can improve upon. Show your storyboard to a friend or work colleague to get their feedback.
