How to Get a Watercolor Effect With Copics

Copic markers are alcohol-based markers that product bold colors ideal for coloring comics, scrapbooks and other crafts projects. Although the markers are alcohol-based, you can achieve a watercolor effect with the markers. Since the alcohol and water will not mix correctly, you must use official alcohol-based blending ink to thin out the intensity of the markers. This two-part process will enable to you transform any image into a watercolor-style illustration. For best results, use lighter colored markers and light-colored or white paper.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the misting bottle halfway with the blender pen refill ink. Spray the liquid onto the card stock paper until the top of the paper just starts to look damp.

    • 2

Draw the outline of a design with the markers just as you would if using a regular marker or pen onto the paper. You can also rub the marker tip onto the bottom of a stamp and then press the colored stamp onto the dampened paper.

    • 3

Allow the paper to dry for about an hour. Spray the surface once more with the mister bottle until the paper is slightly damp on the surface.

    • 4

Color in the design with the markers. Use lighter colors for a more realistic watercolor appearance. Apply enough color so that the design seeps through the paper to the other side. Allow the paper to dry completely.

    • 5

Turn the paper over and use the back side as the front of the image. The resulting slightly blurred and lightened image will look very similar to a watercolor painted image.
